Science Term 2

Science Expo with UC Post Grad Students!

This was soooo much fun!!! We had 3 students from the University of Canterbury visit us on Monday. All the year 5/6 pods went down to the hall to watch some very cool (literally) and hot (exciting) chemistry experiments. Check out the photos below to see some of what went on and how engaged the kids are! Enjoy :)

Elephant Toothpaste!

Two clear liquids turn bright yellow! Nice prediction Max :)

Dry Ice (frozen carbon dioxide) turning water acidic

Lettuce is snap frozen, which turns in brittle so it can be smashed into little pieces!

Next, metals were dissolved in liquids - these liquids where then sprayed at the naked bunsen burner flame. Depending on the type of metal different colours and reactions happened when they hit the heat. The last image is of two metals being sprayed at once - it was a much bigger explosion!!! There was a suggestion of spraying 3 at once (Thanks Mitchell)😀 but health and safety thought better of this idea!!!

Super Impressed!!!

Wow! Science at school is soooo much fun! We have been looking at the different methods scientists use when they researching and wanting to find out information. This week we looked and using a Model to gather and record data and Fair Testing when we were only allowed to change one variable (thing) at a time.

I was so impressed by the number of students that went home and tried our Magic Milk Experiment again using a different types of milk and other liquids. Below are some of the photos that were emailed to me! Man you people are awesome - you blow me away - super impressed!!!

Josh B's results with Calci-Trim Milk

Molly's investigation - Chocolate Milk

Fergus's turn - Milk vs. Water

Check out this cool Ted-Ed - It explains about how a lever works - I bet you could find lots of levers around your home :) Click on this link: The Lever
